This is regular dirt growing highly advanced 'dirt-ponics' as opposed to hydroponic which many seem to use; dirt seems to me simpler and I don't see any advantages to hydro - pro/con below from here

Pros

  • No soil is needed. (DONT CARE)
  • Most plant diseases are eliminated. (SUSPICIOUS)
  • Weeds cannot grow. (NOT RELEVANT)
  • Outdoor pests are not a concern. (TRUE FOR DIRTPONICS TOO)
  • As a result of the last two points, fewer pesticides and herbicides are needed. (NOT RELEVANT)
  • Less water is required. No water is wasted. (TRUE FOR DIRTPONICS TOO)
  • Plants can be grown year-round. (TRUE FOR DIRTPONICS TOO)
  • Plants grow faster and have bigger yields. (MAYBE)
  • Some studies have shown that hydroponically-produced plants are more nutritional and better-tasting. (YEAH RIGHT)
  • Gardeners have much more control over the nutrient amounts their plants receive. (TRUE FOR DIRTPONICS TOO (WITH CONTROLLED NUTRIENTS IN WATER)
  • Less space is required, as plants can be placed closer together than they could in soil. (MEBBE)

Cons

  • Some plants cannot be grown hydroponically. (YEAH)
  • Hydroponics requires more technical knowledge and training than soil cultivation. (YEAH)
  • Setup costs can be very expensive. (YEAH)
  • Crops must be maintained more frequently. (YEAH)
  • If the watering system fails, plants will dry out and die rapidly. (YEAH)
  • If being sold for profit, hydroponically-cultivated plants usually provide less of a return on investment. (YEAH)
  • Some methods require the purchase of a soil-replacement medium. (YEAH)
  • Plant uniqueness is minimized, so diseases will affect all plants to the same degree. (YEAH)

Anyway I think next rows can be improved by keeping the bottoms on and sticking one bottle into the next - also the 'self-watering pot' idea can be used - this is a reservoir of water below each plant which they drink from via a wick. That way the whole system survives for a few weeks with no electricity or external water. The only complication is that now the drainage wicks from one bottle to the next must be at reservoir height and not at the bottom of the bottle.
